This song was the first that I wrote after my 12 hour marathon on 6/21/09.
It was inspired by, I think, The opening line "Be world class be Fresno!". I did not make that up,( nor "Fresno, Smile When You Say That.", another song of mine). I sang that line as if in my mind, I was Al Radka . Al Radka was a Fresno TV pioneer and tireless Fresno advocate and huckster. When I was in the 5th grade, my Baird Elementary School Choir was on his TV show "Funtime with Al Radka". I was shocked to see that behaved entirely different off camera. Think evening whiskey drinker-kinda surly- at 7:am.
The line, " A Culture Of Excellence Where People Get The Best Every Day" is actually, literally, truly- plastered on city vehicles. Really. I did not make this up. I did change the word "people" to "everyone", so as not to plagiarize.

We used to be the intravenous drug capitol of the nation

From the sprawl of the north-east expansion
To Chateau de Fresno out by Kearney Mansion
It’s a semi-tropical paradise of grape vines and fruit trees
That few of us ever sees
And the orchards seem so endless and the soy sways in the sun
You can dump your meth lab chemicals while Shy Girl shoots her gun

At the psychedelic patterns that form out in the fields
As you fly past the junk heaps that line Highway 99

It’s where the city banks development that turns to urban blight
It’s where the police chief runs the whole show
And shuts the town down at night

Gateway to the scenic Southern Sierra
On the banks of the once mighty San Joaquin
It’s a cornucopia of agricultural splendor
The likes of which the world has never seen

So seductive in the springtime
Fantastic in the fall
It’s where rural life meets suburbia with a cow pasture and a mall
Highways that led to nowhere now infected with urban sprawl
It’s where the red necks meet the yuppies
And Jesus Christ rules them all

…and it gets really hot

Though we love to chide and deride you
Your charms are many and in-explicable
Just like the way people lump us in with Bakersfield
Is so annoying as the comparison’s inapplicable
